Mike Monteiro

Mike Monteiro is cofounder and design director of Mule Design, an interactive design studio whose work has been called “delightfully hostile” by The New Yorker. He’s written four books: Design Is a Job, You’re My Favorite Client, Ruined by Design, and The Collected Angers. He’s not as smart as his wife, or as charming as his dog. He’s pretty much given up on tech and is considering a future as a lighthouse keeper.

🗓️ Mike’s talk:

My People Were in Shipping

The first talk Mike Monteiro wrote during the Trump administration was titled How to Fight Fascism. It ended with a slide that said MADE BY AN IMMIGRANT; a slide which he’s copied over into every talk he’s given since then. He was very proud to stand defiantly in front of that slide at the end of his talks, convincing himself that he was standing in solidarity with other immigrants in the crowd, and he was, but there was a word missing. Yes, Mike is an immigrant, but his lineage is a little more complex than that. He’s a Portuguese immigrant. His people were in shipping.

If you are a white man this talk will make you uncomfortable. Which is excellent. Because if we’re gonna fix the mess we made, things are gonna get uncomfortable. It’s the only way through.
