Hacking the UX Job Interview

What does the interview process for UX jobs have in common with tests like the SAT or ACT? Quite a lot, actually. Both often use standardized, cookie-cutter processes that don’t consider the intangible strengths of a person. Both can be easily “gamed” by those privileged enough to get tutoring and coaching.

Fortunately, once we see that interviewing is a lot like standardized testing, we can use the same test-taking strategies to improve our chances of interview success. In this talk, we’ll analyze several types of interviews (the portfolio presentation, behavioral interviews, design challenge), then review techniques that can help candidates present their personal strengths in the interview format. We’ll also look at how hiring managers can make their interview processes more inclusive.
