How do we know whether a problem can be solved by design? In this presentation we will consider the different meanings and effects of "user experience" on the participants in a system—both "core users" and those at the periphery. We will use motivating examples and theoretical analysis to ask challenging questions about our work: Who are we designing our systems for, and who do we exclude -- who are the insiders and who are the outsiders? What are the limitations of user experience as a methodology? Are there "right" ways and "wrong" ways to use the products we create, and who determines that? Attendees will come away from this session with new perspectives on user experience design and systems, to enable them to critically evaluate their own products more holistically and humanely.
